How can the Library help you?

The Library isn’t just somewhere you can get books. It’s somewhere you can do your work on your own or with others, escape sensory overload and get some help with studying. This section of the toolkit will introduce our library and the services it can offer you.

Background

We have specialist library staff who want to help you make the most out of your time at uni. They can help you with finding, choosing and using library resources, amongst many other things.

The library supports teaching, learning and research throughout the University, in collaboration with staff and students. They provide information and resources in a range of formats, with an emphasis on the electronic; environments that facilitate study and learning in a variety of ways; and support for the development of information literacy to enable students to make the best use of learning resources.

How could this affect me?

Many students in the Autism&Uni surveys mentioned the library as somewhere they really enjoyed being, whether they needed some quiet space to get away from it all or find some help or just to get some work done.

Studying in the Library

There’s a range of both walk-in and bookable study seats in the Library at Newton Park. You can choose from quiet locations within the Library with easy access to browse the book shelves, spaces with PCs, or spaces with tables and power where you can use your own device.

If you’re looking for a comfortable place to read or just some quiet reflection, walk-in spaces include some more informal seating (armchairs, sofas and pods). After you have registered as a student you will be able to book a study seat in the library.

Borrowing books

If you have a support worker, they can borrow books on your behalf with a letter of authorisation from you. Your support worker will also need your Library card to borrow books.

Library staff will be happy to help you retrieve books from the shelves. If you think you might need long-term assistance, we can put you in touch with a member of Library staff who can be your named contact.
